Summer Reading and Writing suggestions for Families
 
Book Lists for home use:
The ILA (International Literacy Association) publishes yearly Reading Lists. Though the lists are not "leveled" the books suggested are current, engaging and by grade level bands. Lists also available on the Reading Lists link. The lists provide brief summaries of the books suggested. The lists provided are:
 
The reading bands are:Beginning Readers (K-2, Ages 5-8) Young Readers (Grades 3-4, Ages 8-10), Advanced Readers (Grades 5-6, Ages 10-12) and Young Adults.

Reading:
Excerpt: Here are a few digital and online tools students likely have access to over the summer:
  • Overdrive: Students can check out eBooks and audiobooks using their public library card number.
  • Biblionasium: Like Goodreads for younger people, kids can rate, review, and recommend books for peers.
  • Kidblog: An online writing tool that offers students a safe space to publish reflections on what they are reading, as well as to post digital creations.

Writing During The Summer:
 
The writers for the popular writing blog Two Writing Teachers posted 7 blogs with suggestions for summer writing for students.
 
  • Monday: Encouraging students to begin planning their summer writing space with goals in mind. (Betsy Hubbard)
  • Tuesday: Looking for Reading and Writing Connections (Elizabeth Moore)
  • Wednesday:Six small suggestions to help learners that don’t require children to physically sit and write daily. (Stacey Shubitz)
  • Thursday: Exercises, seating, and engaging activities encouraging fine motor development. (Deb Frazier)
  • Friday:   A challenge for students to use as a motivator to make writing a priority through the summer. Look for the bingo boards and writing ninja challenge instructions in Kathleen's post. (Kathleen Sokolowski)
  • Saturday: Treasured titles that inspire writing. (Lisa Keeler)
  • Sunday: A list of several ideas parents can try with their children to support and encourage them all summer long. (Melanie Meehan)
